Cambi wins the prestigious Energy Innovation Prize for 2007
( - The prize is a great encouragement to us, and shows us that the effort we have put into reducing CO2 emissions is appreciated, states Cambi’s Chairman, Per Lillebø.
The Energy Innovation Price is awarded in a cooperation between Innovation Norway, Enova and the Norwegian Research Council. The prize is meant to be an encouragement to companies that through many years have made a great contribution within the area of energy efficiency and renewable energy. The criteria states that the winner must have contributed to new Norwegian industrial/trade activity, have a positive environmental profile, and at the same time have a potential for profitability in a long term international perspective.
This year’s Price winner, Cambi, is a Norwegian bio-energy company founded in 1989. Today Cambi is a world leader in converting biomass into renewable energy. Cambi’s technology is developed with a strong focus on own research and development. Cambi has delivered 16 plants all over the world, and is currently starting up the world’s most modern biowaste plant in Verdal, Norway. This is the first biogas plant ever to satisfy EU’s strict demands regarding animal by-products (removing infection risk).
Cambi’s plants treat sludge and biowaste from more than 8.6 million people. The energy from these plants replaces more than 200,000 metric tons of fossil fuel generated CO2-emissions a year. In addition, the plants treat waste that would have emitted large amounts of methane if landfilled. Methane is one of the most harmful climate gases.
- Today, Norway has strong professional and research clusters within renewable energy and excellent access to biomass, says Per Lillebø. We should be able to utilize this even better than today, and we hope that the Norwegian authorities will systematically focus on bio-energy in the years to come. Even if we are an International company, nothing would please us more than getting incentives to build even more bio refineries in Norway, he finishes.
